What Is It Like Living in New Jersey?

When considering if living in New Jersey is the right move for you or not, there are plenty of things to consider: What is the nightlife like? How’s the traffic? Is it anything like Jersey Shore? To the last question, the answer is an absolute no. For the rest of those questions, though, we are going to have to go a bit more in-depth to give you the full experience of what it is like living in New Jersey.

Living In New Jersey: What You Need To Know

For many, they know the state of New Jersey to be small and ambiguous. Details of the Garden State elude them––and for good reason. New Jersey is an incredibly diverse state and holds some of the United States’ most secret treasures.

Whether you live in counties of North Jersey, such as Essex, Somerset, or Sussex; or South Jersey counties, such as Atlantic, Cumberland, or Camden; there are great things to experience and wonderful (territorial) people to meet.

In this article, we will delve into all you need to know about living in New Jersey.

Feeling of New Jersey: Living in the Garden State

One of the most important factors when deciding to move to a new area is the overall feeling of the pace. For most people, that includes the weather, food, and nightlife. When living in New Jersey, you have the opportunity to find any type of vibe you’re looking for!

NJ Weather

If you are the type of person who enjoys all four seasons, New Jersey is definitely the place for you. In the summer, you can look forward to hot, humid days on the beach, and in the winter you can wake up to a snow-covered lawn.

No worries, though, these seasons don’t get too extreme. In the summer, temperatures typically hover about 70 degrees, and in the winter they usually stay above 30. This weather makes living in New Jersey a pleasant experience all year!

NJ Food

Food is one of the things that New Jersey is known for. If you are a resident of New Jersey, you will become a food snob in no time. When you travel to other states, you will long for the familiar taste of home.

There are plenty of things to experience in New Jersey, including Wildwoods International Kite Festival, the Riverfest Food and Music Festival in Red Bank, and the Atlantic City’s Miss America Pageant.

After all, no one does pizza or bagels like New Jersey!

NJ Nightlife

New Jersey isn’t all clubs and bars. The diversity of events is just as diverse as the people. There are plenty of annual events, such as Wildwoods International Kite Festival, the Riverfest Food and Music Festival in Red Bank, and the Atlantic City’s Miss America Pageant.

On top of all these great events, New Jersey offers plenty of access to art and culture. There are plenty of old-time diners, operas, and museums available to you when living in New Jersey. If you crave more events (which I don’t know how that’d be possible), New York and Philadelphia are just a short drive away.

Working In New Jersey

When it’s not playtime in New Jersey, it’s work time. The median household income in the Garden State in 2019 was $87,726, which was almost a $10,000 increase from the year before. Key components that contribute to worker success include commute, cost of living, and companies based in the state.

With that being said, let’s dive right in!

NJ Commute

Commute is one of the few downsides of living in New Jersey. The average trip takes about 30 minutes. Fortunately, though, there is a great public transportation system that can make commuting much more manageable.

With New Jersey being such a small state, you also have the opportunity to work out of state––leading to multiple job opportunities. If you take this route, though, be sure to plan for long travel times.

NJ Cost of Living

When looking at the cost of living in the state of New Jersey, there is no single answer. The fact is that it varies widely across the state, with South Jersey being roughly 30% cheaper than the northern counties.

In both areas, however, you can expect to pay a bit more than the national average when living in New Jersey. This can be partially attributed to the expensive housing market, with the average cost being $329, 300 (about $100,00 more than the U.S. average).

NJ Companies

Last of all, the thing that makes New Jersey the most special state of all are the outstanding companies based there. Real estate companies and companies that buy houses in NJ are truly above par.
